Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women through the use of Information and Communication Technologies
The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Committee will be debating about different and effective ways towards reaching and accelerating gender equality and the empowerment of women through Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). They include the aim of ensuring women’s full and effective participation and opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life. UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 looks for achieving gender equality and to empower all women and girls using technology, ICTs in particular, for this goal to be achieved. Through innovation, investment and development of different products and services, the public sector, such as governments, play an important role in advancing gender equality and improving the lives of women. For women, the world over, ICTs can be leveraged for personal security, better access to education and jobs, financial inclusion or to access basic healthcare information. But benefits such as these, rely on women having meaningful access to them which can be facilitated or prevented by several factors, including affordability, relevant content, skills and security.
